Sit-Rep Ecuador
The town of Otavalo, in an Andean valley north of Quito, has been taken over by the Army and National Police of Ecuador. Watch this short news video that gives an idea. Starting at timestamp 0:47 you will notice the large, white buses. Those are National Police buses. The green armored vehicles on the left, and the long line of green, troop transport trucks to the vanishing point on the left, are Army vehicles.

The President arrived in Otavalo last night at 2am in the morning, with an extremely heavy National Police and Army presence. He left at about 2:30pm this afternoon in a huge, black helicopter along with a heavy security contingent. I am not sure that that large, dark helicopter is in the inventory of the military forces of Ecuador. The aircraft may or may not be the property of the government of Ecuador. I have no idea who is flying it. Take a look:

He had to leave by helicopter, because the PanAmerican Hwy in that region is totally blocked by protestors and many tons of debris. At this point the highway can only be cleared by heavy equipment, and that’s not likely to happen this week. If the President tried to leave by road, his convoy would run the real risk of being trapped and ambushed. His only option was to escape by air.
There were also two other, smaller helicopters to evacuate other members of his retinue. The government of Ecuador is in obvious disarray. I have no idea how all this will end.
Mind you that this is the situation in one small city, in the northern Andes, on only the 3rd day of the so-called Paro Nacional. In precisely this region the Inca Empire had to fight for decades in the late 1400s, to militarily subjugate the population just 20 to 50 years before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in what is now known as Ecuador. I have read historical accounts that 50,000 of the region’s male population were killed in battle against the Inca military forces in the decades just before the Spanish invaded. The spirit of popular resistence in northern Ecuador goes back more than half a millenium. This is only the latest battle in a war that spans centuries. This is certainly known to the Ecuadorean Army.
Over in Pastaza province, the Troncal Amazónica (the Amazon Hwy) is being blocked by the Kichwa-speaking indigenous peoples of the region. As in Otavalo in the northern Sierra, the grievances in the Upper Amazon are also ancient, going back to the Spanish Conquest of what is now known as Ecuador, beginning in 1533, and continuing right down to 2025. Watch the video. It doesn’t really matter if you don’t understand Spanish. You’ll learn a lot just by observing the people and the scenery.

These peoples want the theft of natural resources and violations of their human rights to stop. The sudden imposition of the one-dollar per gallon increase in the price of diesel fuel, is the straw that has broken the camel’s back.
It doesn’t matter if you understand Spanish or not. Watch the 8-minute video, and you’ll get the idea. These are not terrorists. These are people whose property and human rights have been egregiously violated for centuries and they have had it. So they are blocking the most important highway in the Amazon region in Ecuador. It looks like the middle of nowhere, but I actually am familiar with the exact spot where this video was shot. I used to live in the Upper Amazon, and I have traveled many hundreds of miles all up and down this very road, from Gualaquiza in southern Morona-Santiago, all the way to well north of Tena in Napo province.
Tomorrow is the 4th day of the 2025 National Uprising in Ecuador. We shall see what the morrow brings.
